I refer to those as lottery tickets.
Well that would be a mis-characterization IMO

Lottery ticket implies a one in over a million chance of being successful

In a number of cases, the odds of buying a very out of favor stock for a rebound being successful are much greater than that. For instance, EKS's Soho preferred buy has rebounded nicely. My SPG while I termed it speculative, the risk / reward I viewed as very favorable. The odds were much greater for success than failure and way better than a lottery ticket. I bought SPG between 5/26 and 5/29 at an average of $58 and today it is at nearly $91.

Speculative buys can work quite well if you do your homework
