Pre-Holiday Effect: President's Day

Although most of the data collected over the last 50 years was for Washington's Birthday, the current President's Day (Monday, February 9) followed suit for the last few years. Essentially, the two days preceeding the holidays are historically the best time to trade - the guess is that traders are offloading the short side of their portfolios as a hedge against positive news coming out over the long weekend. The basic stratgy is to time purchases just before the two day period and sell the day after the return. Of course, it is possible that if enough people did this, it would amplify the effect....Be that as it may, For the two days preceeding the President's Day Holiday, cumulatively compounded share price increases were:

Thursday, February 5 - (0.1%)
Friday, February 6 - 12.7%

So it seems that one could go long on Thursday as well as Wednesday and do equally well. Not that anyone asked, but to give credit where due, this theory and comes from a 1969 PhD dissertation by Richard McEnally called "Seasonal Variations in Price Changes and Holding Period Returns of Common Stocks". A truely mind-numbing read...

A look into the horizon for Feb 2: CATP... this is a pretty near perfect stock... fundamentals, insider trading, TA... earnings velocity, etc. Earnings are coming out on the second so any pullback in this stock can be important. Fiscal year estimates were upgraded twice.. in the last week and 2 weeks ago. Has a 32% projected growth rate a year.I play this as I play QCOM.. The chart pattern is slightly deteriorating and if it continues pulling back for a session or two, be ready to enter it before earnings come out on the second.
