Ron,

Yes, for sure, if you want to do time lapse photos, shoot video, etc..., you will need a good, steady tripod. My advice is to look for one built for field scopes. They are generally light in weight but very steady and can hold the weight of a camera with a long lens as most field scopes are about twice the weight of a camera.

As for hobbyist, amateur and pro photographers, there isn’t too much difference. It’s kind of like when people ask me the difference between a violin and a fiddle. There isn’t any. It’ the music you make that is the difference. :o)
