TEKTRONIX: MPEG in Tektronix profile doubles capacity and lowers storage costs for broadcasters M2 PRESSWIRE-27 January 1998-TEKTRONIX: MPEG in Tektronix profile doubles capacity and lowers storage costs for broadcasters (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD Tektronix, Inc. (NYSE:TEK), a digital video systems leader, today unveiled professional MPEG-2 4:2:2 profile @ Main Level support for its world-class Profile PDR200 video file server. The MPEG upgrade doubles broadcast capacity and lowers the cost of storage in on-air applications. MPEG 2 4:2:2 meets low data rate needs for transmission, and also provides quality and flexibility required in a production environment. The provision of temporal compression provided by the MPEG standard will approximately double the PDR200 video file servers storage efficiency for similar quality, as well as enable much faster data transfers over Fibre Channel. Tektronix played a key role in the development of the original MPEG standard and was instrumental in extending the standard to include the 4:2:2 profile for professional video applications. "The adoption of MPEG in Tektronix servers sets the stage for interoperability between manufacturers," said Bruce Penney, VND principal engineer and SMPTE/EBU task force member for Harmonized Exchange of Bit Streams. "Support for MPEG 4:2:2 continues the Tektronix tradition of helping broadcasters reduce costs, achieve greater efficiency, and improve production quality." The Tektronix implementation allows users flexibility in selecting an appropriate video quality for each application. The MPEG encoder offers both 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 chroma sampling, variable bit rates of 4 to 50 Mb/s, and group of picture (GOP) structures that can range from I-frame only to 16 frame GOP. The PDR200 video file server can be easily configured for different applications throughout the facility and satisfies the requirements of both contribution and distribution quality video applications. PDR200 Users Can Now Configure for up to 8 Video Replay, 32 Audio Channels The MPEG 4:2:2 upgrade allows PDR200 users to configure for up to 8 video replay and 32 audio channels. Increasing the number of channels accessing common storage can reduce the need to maintain multiple copies of material on different servers and significantly lowers the cost per channel. Configuration options of 1 in/6 out, 2 in/4 out, 1 in/2 out and 0 in/8 out enable customers to configure the PDR200 server to meet their specific needs. The openness and flexibility of the Profile PDR200 video file server and MPEG 4:2:2 reflect Tektronix commitment to integrated, scalable, standards-based solutions. The award-winning Profile video file serverwhich has more than double the market share of its nearest competitoris a key element in the Tektronix Digital Media Foundation initiative. Tektronix Digital Media Foundation initiative is a distributed network of storage devices, linked via audio/video routers and data networks, providing an open system environment for applications ranging from editing and live production to on-air play. The DMF enables users to move and manage media throughout a broadcast facility, regardless of whether the data is stored on tape, disk or other data storage devices. The DMF thus allows a gradual migration to servers, provides faster access to more material over a wider area, and ensures interoperability between applications from different vendors. The MPEG-2 upgrade, which can be ordered immediately, will ship in May. Tektronix is offering a limited time discount of up to 40% on upgrade kits to customers who order a PDR200 video file server and take delivery before the end of May. The discount is also available to current PDR200 users who order the upgrade before the end of May.
