...lurkers far outnumber those who post...

Any idea what that ratio might be? Is there any way to figure out, for example, the number of members that have signed in over the last few months but who have never posted?

I'm also curious how high the hit rate might be for people who access SI over the public server (the one that displays the ads) vs. those that sign in that day as members.

If you don't have such general figures, it might be fun to track one thread and then extrapolate from there.

I think your concern is well founded Brad. It seldom occurs to me, but when it does I reply to those emails by saying I'd be glad to reply if the questions are asked on SI. Mostly I get simple kudos or something which does not require a response.

I do know some posters on SI who have removed their email from their profile for the exact reason you mention.

...could be implemented quickly...

So you did!

This is great, and a major advantage is that the messages can be deleted, unlike some of the more trivial blither (maybe even including this message) that happens in some of the wilder discussion threads.

I wonder if this will kill the XXXXXXX thread, though, or whether it will continue where all can watch and marvel.

Super job, Brad.

As for the discussion about lurkers versus posters, I'm aware of many, many readers of, at least, the threads relating to the networking company where I work. But there are few posters, and those must think very carefully before they post, whether in the thread that relates to their employer, or to the competition. That's as it should be.

Dick

Brad,
Thanks for your prompt reply. I was dumbfounded, on jan.27 I was asking if private-message was do-able, and before the ink was dry, it was on the thread::::congratulations on a job well done.
Off Topic:::notice that Jef started this thread. I have a brother like that, He has started hundreds of things over the years and somehow, I always end up finishing them....BWG
This should stop a lot of off-topic and irrevelant messages on the main threads, although I am always open to some humour and a few laughs::::know you are busy, no return message expected.
thanks again::::nysebob2

RE: Private E-Mail Purging Question?

Brad,

Could you explain the purging schedule (if any) and procedures to review previously sent (or received) private messages?

I notice that some of my private messages (both sent and receive) still show up in the "Messages To Me" and "Messages From Me" lists, but not all of them. I sent a private message a couple days ago which I haven't received a response to (although I expected one). It no longer shows up in my "From Me" list, although older private messages do.

Thanks!
