Let's look at another industry, an industry the north and south needed, lumber. The northern businessman had to pay enough wages for room, board and a family. The southern businessman had to pay for room and board for his slaves which didn't include a house or clothing. His slaves weren't dressed at human beings because they weren't considered humans but the northern family had to have clothes and a home. The Civil War was really about cheap labor. The side that had the cheapest labor would dominate in business.
