I suspect part of it may also be that percentage of cases is skewing towards younger age groups overall (which have lower mortality rates). Helped by more attention being paid to nursing homes.

Here in Maryland, in the earlier days the 50-59 age group had the most cases. Now, the 30-39 age group has the most (followed by the 40-49 age group). And the 20-29 age group is slowly catching up to the 50s. (though the 80+ age group accounts for ~46% of all fatalities)

South Carolina (emerging hotspot) the 20s age bracket has the most cases (17%).
