Yes and no. The 3G alliance is still in the development stage as IS95 was but they have MUCH more clout(odviously) than just QCOM had at the same point in their development stage. From what I am reading it sounds like the people in charge haven't gotten down to the nitty gritty of how the systems will actually have to work. It sounds like they are still in the stage of saying "we want this signaling and that signaling." In the ladder example they are still deciding whether to make the ladder out of pine or oak. They haven't decided how tall it is, how wide it is, how wide the steps have to be, how many steps they have to have or any of that kind of stuff.

You have to remember that you are dealing with a HUGE buracracy (I think) and that it will take time for them to flesh out all of the details. Even if they decide on what the basic idea of 3G is now I would count on quite a while (a year or more at least) before the details are decided on. It is just that the details are not as important as the main idea in this case. Back to the ladder, if you were the company that owned all the pine in the world then you would REALLY want them to use pine instead of oak and pine right? Same thing for Qualcomm. Qualcomm owns patents on specific implementations for CDMA that you cannot currently get around if you want to be IS95 compliant. If ETSI adopts a system that is backwards compatible to IS95 then QCOM is in the cat birds seat. If not it could be more dicey. We are losing sight of the fact that some of the patents that QCOM holds (mobile power control, and some other stuff) is still REALLY important to ANY incarnation of CDMA that is currently being thought of.

Another thing is that we have to remember that the organization that is approving this standard has people stuck with Millions (if not Billions) of dollars worth of infrastructure. If you offer them a standard that tells them that they have to throw away their old stuff and start over they will laugh in your face. With the results of the Vodaphone trial QCOM showed that they could reuse their infrastructure and expand capacity with a minimum of reinvestment. WOW, 3G just got a lot less important, we can get better capacity without spending money on something that may be overkill for our needs.

One of Ericcsons trump cards was just pulled and it was a stinker. This could drag on for quite a while now that the phone companies (infrastructure buyers) have a choice. If it does then Ericcson has a MAJOR problem, without a new standard they are locked out. :)

I realize I am rambling and that some of this is odvious but some people may not have realized ALL of the implications. They may not care but if they read about QCOM I doubt it.

BTW this is no more a global standard than IS95. It is really only a new european standard.

Feb 10 shareholders meeting.

Here is the proposal:

Caxton called IR and was informed that the meeting should last 2-2.5 hr., starting at 9:00 am.

I called Jasmine Restaurant today and they can accomodate us with no problem. They propose a variety of Chinese dishes, at a per head price of no more than $15 including tips (except booz for those who need a nooner). If we have say 20 or more people, they will even block us a private room. That may be good in case the group of strangers decided to get into a hostile discussion of buy or sell.

I propose three methods of rendevous. Caxton, wearing green and I, wearing red, will hang out in front of the main Lusk Blvd entrance before and after the meeting. A 6' 2" gringo with a fat Chinaman dressed like Christmas trees probably would not be too hard to spot. Otherwise, anyone can just show up at Jasmine before noon.

Hope to see you all there.
