If I'm not mistaken, the net result of all this is that big pharma is getting a windfall of new cash and being put into an advantageous position to issue more stock-bringing in even more cash. So, while consolidations could result in elimination of some overlapping alliances, the bigger trend is a LOT more $$ going to R & D. That means new partnerships for even earlier stage compounds.

Only seems logical that Ligand would pick up a generous share of all this over the next 2 years, especially since they are establishing such a respectable record of success in trials.

It's thus logical to assume that Ligand could be announcing more than one new and unexpected alliance for earlier stage projects over the next 18 to 24 months. Since they were already speculating on 1999 profitability, that could also be accellerated.

Henry, what odds would you give on positive EPS on 3q or 4Q 1998? IMHO, I'd say at least 10% for 4Q, 5% for 3Q. (Just another prediction to wake everybody up.)
