Magpies are fascinating birds.
i haven't seen one for years but i had a life changing experience
with one when i was in my hunter/gatherer decision-making stage
as a youth... (between ages 8 and 12)... my brother (6 years older)
was teaching me to be a hunter like he was (he still is one).

i was at my grandparent's homestead/ranch/farm... this was in my
daisy air rifle years. i spotted a magpie, and picked up a rock
(i didn't have my BB gun). it was on the ground and i HIT it...
(this NEVER happened before - an AMAZING MIRACLE) i picked
it up while it was struggling around trying to gather its senses. i held
it... petted it... and it recovered pretty quickly. not long after... maybe
15 minutes?... it got away from me. i couldn't catch it so i picked up
another rock and threw it at the bird just as it was taking flight. I HIT
IT AGAIN !! IN MID-FLIGHT !! ANOTHER AMAZING MIRACLE !!

i had hit sparrows and a robin once with my BB gun. i got a good
"shaming" from my grandmother over the robin... but i'd never hit a bird
with a rock before (have you?) ...and NOW... two miracles in 15 minutes ??
that tends to make one take notice, eh? was it a SIGN? i took it as one. i
took it as a sign that i was not cut out to be a hunter - i was a gatherer. i
later had other experiences that confirmed it... but the "magpie" experience
was the first.

...so when rod stewart came out with "Maggie May" i loved the song... i already had a "bond". :-)

2 or 3 duck and deer hunting trips with my brother brought home the message that i was not cut
out for hunting. Killing gives me a bad feeling. i'm not all that great at "gathering" either. Working
gives me a bad feeling... haha, wink... ;-)

i'm best at being a "lazy" person. i find ways to be productive that require less work than gathering.

i like to watch...
