Yes, the Amarone was especially special.

We tasted the Yara Yering and Botrytis Semillon right after so that the newcomers could recognize the effect of botrytis on a very-ripe old red wine. All three were spectacular. A friend brought back all the Amarone the winery could sell him. His visit to the west coast was the occasion for most of the tasting that went on after Xmas.

The next day, we made a trip up to the Ridge vineyards and winery. The tasting room was closed, but they had just pruned the Monte Bello vineyard, so I collected a few cuttings for my garden. Hope they grow. Also picked up a full wine box of black walnuts under a few trees up there. Yum. Now how am I going to shell 20 lbs of walnuts?

A few friends and I are founding a tasting club here in San Jose. It'll be modeled more or less on the Washington Wine and Cheese Society. But first, we need a name. Something with a good acronym would do well. Sort of the wine-equivalent of BURP (Brewers United for Real Potables). Any suggestions? Care to join us?
