TTR Launches Campaign to Help Software, Content and Music Publishers Stem Growing Market for Illegal Disc Replication Business Wire - January 28, 1998 15:50 %TTR %DISCGUARD TTRE NMBS %NEW-YORK %COMPUTERS %ELECTRONICS %COMED %INTERACTIVE %MULTIMEDIA %INTERNET %PRODUCT V%BW P%BW Jump to first matched term NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 28, 1998-- Company's Copy-Protected CD-ROMS Challenge Publishers to "Break" Its Anti-Piracy Technology TTR Technologies Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of TTR, Inc. (OTC BB: TTRE), has launched a campaign designed to demonstrate the ability of its DiscGuard(TM) anti-piracy technology to stop the illegal replication and use of CD-ROM and DVD media. The cornerstone of the new marketing campaign is a demonstration CD-ROM which contains a game protected with TTR's DiscGuard signature. The CD-ROM will run on any computer and recipients are invited to both enjoy the game and try to copy it, through burning or replication. The decision to release discs demonstrating the new DiscGuard technology was reached after thorough testing in TTR's in-house labs and at the labs of the NSTL (National Software Testing Laboratory). "Though both the original and the copy contain the same data, the unique and non-reproducible DiscGuard signature enables the game to run only on the original CD," said Arik Shavit, CEO of TTR Technologies Ltd. "CDs identified as copies will run an alternate application, which includes information on TTR and DiscGuard technology. DiscGuard gives software publishers the option of running any alternate application when the disc is identified as an unauthorized copy." DiscGuard addresses both the problems of illicit mass-production of software or other electronic content (counterfeiting) and copying by the casual user using the low-cost CD recorders available on the market (disc burning). "Worldwide piracy is an 11.3 billion dollar problem. Any technology which can help counter the effects of counterfeiting and other forms of piracy are a welcome addition to our industry's arsenal in the fight against software piracy," said Steven A. Bowers, spokesman for the Software Publishers Association based in Washington, D.C. The new campaign follows TTR's December 1997 announcements that it had licensed DiscGuard to Nimbus CD International, Inc. (NASDAQ: NMBS), a leading international CD replicator, and to Doug Carson & Associates, Inc., the world's leading supplier of signal processing systems used to create CD and DVD recording masters. TTR's DiscGuard enhanced mastering system, which has three worldwide patents pending, places an indelible digital "signature" on optical media at the time of manufacture, without which the software cannot be used. This "signature" is designed to be read by disc drives but cannot be duplicated by disc recorders or by re-mastering, making it a highly effective weapon in the battle against the illegal duplication of software, music, video and other content, distributed on optical discs. DiscGuard is available for replication at Nimbus CD replication facilities. In addition to protecting software and content distributed on CD-Rom discs, TTR's CEO Arik Shavit says the DiscGuard technology should help spur the growth of the DVD format for movies. "We anticipate that the availability of DiscGuard's superior media protection capability will encourage publishers and motion picture producers to release more DVD titles and create the critical mass needed for the DVD industry to take off in 1998," he said. TTR Inc. is primarily engaged in the development and marketing of a family of proprietary products that are designed to protect intellectual property rights and prevent the unauthorized reproduction and use of electronic content and media, including software and audio CDs and DVD discs. DiscGuard(TM) is a trademark of TTR, Inc. All other trade names are the properties of their respective owners. This press release is available on the KCSA Worldwide web site at www.kcsa.com.
