Fourteen people were killed and at least 88 others were wounded in citywide shootings over Father’s Day weekend, marking the worst weekend for gun violence this year.

A toddler and four teenagers were among those shot to death between Friday evening and Monday morning, according to data maintained by the Chicago Sun-Times. Seven other juveniles were also struck by gunfire.

The spate of shootings came just three weeks after 24 people were killed and at least 61 others were shot during Chicago’s most violent weekend in modern history. That historic surge in shootings happened amid the unrest that gripped the city when a downtown protest over the officer-involved killing of George Floyd devolved into chaos and led to days of looting.

‘Bullets destroy neighborhoods’

This weekend’s youngest victim, 3-year-old Mekay James, was shot Saturday evening when someone opened fire at his father as they drove through the 600 block of North Central in Austin, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Mekay’s father rushed him to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

During a news conference Sunday, Police Supt. David Brown mourned the boy’s death and also reflected on the killing of 13-year-old Amaria Jones, who was shot hours after Mekay when a stray bullet tore through her apartment in the same neighborhood and pierced her neck as she watched television.

Amaria died at Stroger Hospital a short time later, authorities said. Two teenage boys, ages 15 and 16, were also wounded in the attack.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - A Fort Myers police officer was arrested after he failed to contact the Department of Children and Families in regards to a young child's safety, according to Fort Myers Police Chief Derrick Diggs.

Officer Tyler Williams has been placed on unpaid administrative leave and could face internal charges with the department for violations.

His arrest stems from a traffic stop on January 18, 2020 at Colonial and Solomon Boulevards. Officer Williams pulled over a car for speeding at 4:50 a.m.

During this stop, it was the officer's duty to report information about a young child's safety, which put the child's welfare in jeopardy, according to Chief Diggs.

In February 2020, 3-year-old Serenity Robinson died after her mother, Leslie Zeagler, crashed her car near MLK Boulevard and Rockfill Road. Zeagler was high at the time of the crash, with meth, fentanyl, methadone, benzoylecgonine, diazepam, and nordiazepam in her system, according to her arrest report. Serenity was not in a car seat when her mother crashed her car.

According to Leslie Zeagler's friend, Kelly Schwartz, Officer Williams pulled over Zeagler in January for speeding. She claims Zeagler got off and Williams did not report the fact that Serenity was not in a car seat during that traffic stop in January.

A month later, Serenity died.

Kelly Schwartz is also Randy Robinson's girlfriend. Robinson is Serenity's father.

According to court records, Zeagler's license was suspended in January 2019 due to failure to pay a traffic fine.

An internal investigation started in the department, the State Attorney's Office reviewed the case, and a warrant was issued for Williams' arrest.

Williams is now facing a third-degree felony charge for failure to report child abuse and neglect.
