Wednesday January 28, 10:46 am Eastern Time Company Press Release SOURCE: DSC Communications Corporation SaskTel Selects DSC's Litespan(R) Access Systems for Deployment; DSC's Litespan-2012 Provides Migration Path to Broadband Services DALLAS, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- DSC Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: DIGI - news) and SaskTel, the leading full-service communications company based in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, announced today the purchase and installation of DSC's Litespan(R)-2012 systems into SaskTel's digital network. SaskTel chose DSC's access platforms for a network-wide rollout of Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier (NGDLC) systems, which will provide fiber- optic performance throughout Saskatchewan. SaskTel took delivery and jointly installed the DSC platforms in late 1997, and terms of the agreement were not disclosed. In addition to providing traditional narrowband services and capabilities, the Litespan-2012 provides broadband readiness, giving SaskTel the flexibility to migrate to broadband services when needed. This ensures that SaskTel will be able to maximize its investment in this newly installed base of access equipment, both now and in the future. ''SaskTel required an advanced fiber based access system that could provide today's narrowband services, integrate easily and reliably with our existing digital switch platform, and at the same time provide an evolution path to support broadband technologies and services,'' said Kelvin Shepherd, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, SaskTel. ''The DSC Litespan is a field-proven system which we have selected as a preferred option in our larger centers to reinforce our current copper loop plant while deploying fiber optics and broadband services, including xDSL based services. We expect over the next few years that the Litespan system will allow us to deliver better and faster customer service, as well as the advanced multimedia services our customers are demanding.'' ''This marks another significant milestone for the Litespan family of products,'' said Dave Ehreth, vice president, DSC's Access Division. ''The strength of our Litespan offering has already been demonstrated in the United States, where our access platforms support more than 7 million network lines. Now SaskTel is the first Canadian service provider to select and standardize on our Litespan-2012 platform. ''Several factors make Litespan-2012 a logical choice for carriers such as SaskTel,'' said Ehreth. ''Key among these are the system's TR-303 compatibility and its modular design, which make it highly versatile and cost-effective to deploy. Network operators can deploy it now with their current network requirements in mind. Later, when increased capacity is needed or broadband services are to be added, the same embedded system can be readily adapted and used.'' The Litespan-2012 is a multi-service transport platform that supports OC-12 transport and broadband service interfaces. The system also supports the full set of interfaces featured in DSC's Litespan-2000, the integrated SONET-based optical loop carrier which has been the foundation for DSC's growing line of access products. SaskTel is the leading full service communications company in Saskatchewan, providing voice, data, Internet, text and messaging services over a fiber optic-based, fully digital network, as well as cellular, paging and FleetNet 800 service through its SaskTel Mobility division. DSC Communications Corporation is a global provider of advanced telecommunications products, including digital switching, transmission, access and network management systems. DSC's integrated network solutions support voice, data and broadband services, such as intelligent network, wireless and switched digital video applications. DSC had 1997 revenues of approximately $1.6 billion and is active in more than 60 countries worldwide.
