There was a study with rats that relates to this. Feed two groups of rats the same calories worth of corn, but with one group the corn was puffed up full of air like a cereal or snack food. The rats eating the puffed up corn got fat and the others did not.

Seems like basic chemistry to me...the puffing increased the surface area greatly and increased the efficiency of the digestive process.

The moral of the story is use calories as a rough guideline if you wish, but whatever you do don't eat processed foods. Unprocessed foods will make you feel full longer from the less efficient/slower digestion and will provide you with fewer net calories because of the extra energy used. So you will be less likely to get fat.
