Sorry to contradict gold is just an expensive metal. There are many other metals cheaper or more expensive that have also a lasting glitter in free air.

The Romans and barbarians fell in love with gold, and the same excitement for many continue to this day.

The bottomline question is "what is a store of value" under any condition - drinking water could be one, food to eat would be two - gold is worthless if no one is interested to buy it in exchange of water and food.
