How a continent devoid of natural resources hold that economic power for so long? Being smart. Explore any opportunity to get the upper hand. As Europe was finished at the end of the Dark Ages. It got technology from the Moslems to navigate and discover new lands. There was need for manpower in the new world, get slaves from Africa and produce in the new world. Next Europe kicked start the Industrial Revolution, Needed consumer for the goods produced. Let's abolish slavery and have wage earners to have an income. Whenever there weren't enough spoils to plunder, The Europeans went to each other throats until the US put order in the European house. As the new kid on the block -the US- raised the Europeans quickly implemented social democracies. and they rode the Bretton Woods agreement wave. As soon as China established the special economic zones, there went the Europeans to make huge profits using the Chinese manpower. Now that the US is telling China the easy ride they had on US technology and market is vanishing, there is old Europe wanting to play both sides. See Germany trying to play nice partner to China.
