Well, folks, not only am I the only shareholder to have visited ARET, but I just added another "only" today I'm even more proud of. Jens, you and Harb, being like-minded computer geeks, will appreciate this one.

I currently have the distinction of being the only threadster to have visited SI at their new location in Overland Park, KS. For those not familiar with the area, OP is a large, ritzy suburb of Kansas City. ARET is located perhaps 3 miles from SI.

I couldn't remember the address, but remembered the rough location of the SI office, so my best friend and I parked near the building and walked around, looking for an office that said "Silicon Investor" on it.

Turns out it's unmarked, but I did look in one shop window (they're in a strip mall) and saw a billiards table, music gear, golf clubs, and a leather couch in front of a big-screen TV. Knowing that the Dryer brothers (founders of SI) are true geeks, I determined that had to be the place. I was right.

I have never in my life seen such a concentration of high-powered computers!

SI is fed by an SQL-Server back-end running on a quad-CPU Pentium 200. For those not familiar with the term, that is 4 Pentium 200 computers combined into one. The SQL Server box was sitting on the floor. On a table above it was a row of dual-CPU Pentium 300's. I think there were 6 or 7 of them there.

Their ISP is located 2 floors above them in the same building. They link to the ISP via just two 10-mbit ethernet lines. Since I'm accustomed to thinking in ethernet terms, I was amazed it was working through so little bandwidth, but now that I think about it, that's about like 14 T1 lines. Or 670 28.8k modems. Serious bandwidth!

Brad showed off a bit of the hardware capabilities for me. When he clicked on any message link locally, the response was immediate. Might not sound like such a big deal, but keep in mind we're talking over 3 million messages. The entire database (messages, related tables, and indexes) totals about 15 gig currently.

Even more amazing was when he did a text search. Again, instantaneous. He entered "digital" "cpq" and "wdc", each of which would generate an enormous number of hits alone, let alone doing all the sifting to get the resulting subset. Again, instantaneous! I was floored at the performance!

We visited with Brad for about an hour. Turns out Jill works from home in California, so I didn't get to meet her.

It looks to me like SI has turned the corner. It's no longer a money-pit hobby for the Dryers. It should be a major business before long. Looks like it already is.

Brad gave me an armload of t-shirts, too. I'm going to see if I can get my family to all wear them and we can go out and show them off.

I think they could sell those t-shirts pretty easily.

Oh, the logo with the people drinking and talking? That's taken from a painting that was displayed near the entrance. Recognized it immediately.

I really do envy them. If you've read the articles about them, you know they're doing what they do simply because they love it. Would love to be a part of that. And if I ever see that they're looking for any part-time help, I'm going to be pounding on the door. Definitely cool, bleeding-edge stuff they're into. Plus, it'd be nice to shoot an occasional game of eight-ball with them. :)

Looking forward to stopping out there again sometime.
