U S West, Cisco Sys To Form Network Services Alliance

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Dow Jones)--U S West Communications Group
(USW) formed an alliance designating Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) its
strategic vendor for data network infrastructure and for resale of
customer-premise equipment.

In a press release Wednesday, U S West said it will "extensively use" Cisco equipment in a nationwide build-out of an integrated voice-data network, and in its integration services.

U S West will install Cisco BPX wide-area network ATM switches in more than 80 points of presence in the U.S. by the end of 1998.

U S West also plans to deploy more than 200,000 Cisco dial ports for its customer and business Internet and dial access services over the next five years, and will deploy Cisco's AccessPath dial access systems.

U S West was designated a Cisco-powered network. As a Cisco-powered
network provider, U S West will provide services based predominantly on Cisco equipment and software in its out-of-region data network.

The companies will explore collaboration to develop and deploy advanced technologies in various areas including voice-data integration, frame relay services, ATM backbone switching architectures, network publishing and IP telephony.
