TJ - Ballard is an old company in this slice of fuel cells since I started posting on Prodigy.

Today I am not privy to their technology but at the time there was much hype. I can write a a long article on all the new developments.

The actual situation is that to best of my knowledge fuel cells are still stuck at around 60% efficiency much better than IC vehicles which I understand the best efficiency achieved is around 40% of the more modern high octane IC motors.

With energy content of 55MJ/kg for gasoline, hydrogen powered FCEV especially for truckers and other high energy consuming heavy equipment that where powered on diesel, hydrogen and modern fuel cells are a winner hands down with hydrogen energy content around 140MJ/kg. Extraction efficiency from water with catalists is improveing on almost a monthly basis.

An elaborate explanation that proves Tesla Elon Musk public statements dead wrong, is published by Tevor Milton of Nikola.

Tesla is a manufacturer of Li-Ion batteries so Elon Musk promotes his produacts.

Hydrogen FCEV is not well suited for small cars and BEV are better overall as most private cars stay idle most of the day (and have plenty of time to be charged) and travel relative short distances of not more than 100KM average, in contrast to heavy equipment, busses, trains and trucker that in many cases work around the clock and on long distances and cannot afford long charging times and relative short charge discharge life cycles with lowering its energy density capacity with every charge and discharge cycle.

Presently the bottle neck is still the fuel cell the separation of hydrogen from water makes substantial advances see linkedin.com which make Elon Musk theory absolete.

Today batteries have an energy content of less than 1Mj/kg compared to hydrogen of 140MJ/kg which is in great abundance in contrast to cobalt lithium etc used in Li-Ion batteries.

Li-Ion batteries is a relative old technology and already in 1989 I have initiated an LBO buyout of Tadiran Lithium batteries with OPCO see slideshare.net for use what was at the time portable computer which evolved to laptop computer - the concept was to build a flat slim battery pack behind the portable / laptop computer screen

Hopefully solid state batteries based on magnesium will supplant lithium but even than their internal charge/discharge cycle and energy density is relatively very low not to mention the self-discharge..
