Mike, I hope the following article will help clear up the differences between Fibre Channel and gigabit ethernet. They are different, just happen to run at about the same speed. It does sound promising for fibre (note the spelling is not the same as fiber, as in fiber optics):

"The lower cost, Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop topology has been adopted by all of the major server and storage vendors as the next generation storage connectivity standard for their mass storage and enterprise systems."

And, oh, nobody's cratering Cisco. If they get behind in any particular aspect of network technology, they just go out and buy a small to medium size company that has what they want.
