January 28, 1998 -- San Francisco Bay Area corporate telecommuters won't be waiting to access their corporate networks, or waiting on the freeway, thanks to Covad Communications Co. and its new TeleSpeed(SM) service using Diamond Lane Communications' high-speed data access delivery system. Covad Communications, a Santa Clara based Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC), recently announced its TeleSpeed service which connects telecommuters to their corporate LAN at speeds up to 1.5 Megabits per second (Mbps). The enabling ADSL technology is Diamond Lane's Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) which allows high-speed data to be carried over ordinary copper phone lines, using state-of-the-art ADSL-ATM (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, Asynchronous Transfer Mode) technology. "We're excited to be a part of delivering these new high-speed data services to Silicon Valley, the world's technology showplace," says Diamond Lane Chairman and CEO Jerry Parrick, "and we're extremely pleased to be selected as the ADSL system of choice by Covad, a hot new market competitor. We're convinced that Covad is meeting a tremendous need of today's data-intensive corporations who can now give their most valuable knowledge workers fast LAN access without the commute." With Covad's TeleSpeed service, telecommuters at home can download data from their corporate LAN at speeds similar to those experienced when working in their corporate office. The TeleSpeed service brings high performance communications of the new millennium to corporate customers today. Corporations will be able to provide their telecommuters with speeds from 384 kbps up to 1.5 Mbps, at prices ranging from $125 to $195 per month. "The affordability of this ADSL service makes it extremely attractive to corporations looking for high bandwidth at low cost," says Parrick. "And telecommuters, interested in maximizing their personal productivity and time efficiency, will immediately benefit from the 'always-on' access that the Diamond Lane enabled service provides." "Competitive local exchange carriers such as Covad are in the vanguard of companies who will bring high-speed DSL service to the marketplace. By the year 2000 we expect all of the Fortune 1000 companies to have DSL service available for their telecommuters," Parrick says. Covad selected Diamond Lane's access system for its key competitive features, including: -- Diamond Lane's system is commercially ready now; service can be turned up to customers today. -- Diamond Lane's system delivers higher speed performance for longer loop lengths. This allows Covad to provision customers at greater distances from the Central Office with megabit performance. -- Diamond Lane's system is price competitive; the cost of equipment puts high speed access within the reach of today's remote LAN access user. According to John Rugo, vice president of operations for Covad, "Diamond Lane's system is reliable and available at competitive prices today. The system provides Covad with the flexibility to deliver symmetrical services like TeleSpeed 384 and TeleSpeed 1.1, and asymmetric services like TeleSpeed 1.5." Diamond Lane's ADSL-ATM system is now installed in major markets on the East and West coasts of the United States, and in Europe and Asia. "It's a wide open market. What DSL does is allow Covad to leapfrog the competition by giving their corporate customers the highest-speed service available in the marketplace today," says Jerry Parrick.
