Because he set himself up for it. He made not wearing a mask a major political litmus test. Now that his gamble that the worst was over has failed in a spectacular manner, he has nowhere to hide. He made the decision to go against the advice of experts for his own political gain. Sort of. For the most part he refused to make any decisions at all. And events dragged him along. Which happens when you decide not to decide.

He assumed that the virus would follow the same pattern as the annual flu. And he placed a huge bet that he could refuse to do anything unless forced and it would go away in the summer. When it did, he could ridicule his opponents for panicking over nothing and try to paint himself as standing tall against the fear mongers. And that could have worked. If it was the flu or something like it. But it isn't. Not by a long shot. Now he has to gamble that this latest outbreak will be it and then it recedes by September or so. The nightmare scenario for him and the country is that is sort of sloshes back and forth across the country and we get another peak going into October. Or flu season. Which should really fill up the hospitals between the two of them.

Factor in the growing evidence that a significant number of people don't die or get over it in a few weeks, but have longer-lasting symptoms if not being permanently disabled. and things start to look extremely dire for the country and our economy.
