S-A Lends OpenCable Hand

Scientific-Atlanta Inc. will focus on end-to-end system integration of CableLabs' OpenCable interoperable digital devices and services. The goal: ensure that individual interfaces specified by OpenCable will support an integrated network of services. According to terms of a deal with CableLabs, S-A will produce and document a network architecture reference mode; identify scenarios for customer use, billing and third-party applications that involve OpenCable events and data flows; and define key system/network interfaces with emphasis on the physical layer and communication layer interfaces. OpenCable is an industry initiative to obtain and deploy a family of interoperable advanced digital set-tops from various manufacturers.

Zenith Dropping Analog Box Line

Zenith will stop maunfacturing analog set-top boxes in the second quarter, according to a letter sent to customers by Bill Luehrs, the president of the vendor's Network Systems Division. He cited Zenith's "15-year proud history in the analog subscription cable industry," but added that "it is now apparent that the transition to digital delivery of video entertainment is becoming more of a reality."
