Jared is fine. DJTJ is fine. If you're part of the family, you'll never be out of work. But if you're an outside who finds himself in Trump's orbit, there is a non-trivial chance that your career will end.Steve Bannon. Paul Manafort. Paul Ryan. Reince Priebus. Sean Spicer. Chris Christie. Mick Mulvaney. John Kelly. Kirstjen Nielsen. H.R. McMaster. Rex Tillerson. Rick Perry. John Bolton. And now Jeff Sessions. This is not the normal course of events for a White House. Normally, people close to the president become stars and their time in and around the White House is a launching pad—or stepping stone—for their career. The Trump White House is a graveyard for careers. And what's really striking is that Sessions never broke with Trump. He was loyal to Trump, and Trumpism, all the way down the line. With one exception. As the bard Meatloaf once sang, he would do anything for love. But he wouldn't do that . The result is that Sessions is finished as a politician. He'll never win another election, or get appointed to a Republican office, again. This speaks to the true nature of Trumpism, I think. It really isn't a political movement. It's a personality cult. Trumpism is whatever Trump last said. What that means is that there can be no other standard bearer for Trumpism, no other future for the Republican party, other than the one Trump wills. I'm sure that will work out fine for the family. Other Republicans . . . not so much.thebulwark
