Second Generation 4.6GB DVD-R Specs To Be Decided In June

Nikkei English News via Individual Inc. : TOKYO (Nikkei)--The DVD Forum is expected
to finalize specifications of the second-generation digital videodisc rewritable (DVD-R)
medium in around June, organization officials said. The biggest change between the first
and the second generations is an increase in the single-side data capacity from 3.95
gigabytes to 4.6 gigabytes.

DVD-R media allow data to be recorded only once. They are mainly used to test and
verify DVD-ROM titles before the titles are sent to commercial production. However,
their 3.95-gigabyte capacity has been causing a nuisance among software companies
since the capacity falls short of the 4.6 gigabyte data space given to DVD-ROM and
DVD video discs.

Sony using DVx, over their own codec on PCs is possible. Their chip is for cameras. If they can't make it cheaper and have a quality product, they are in the market.
