Some infrastructure starting to appear: According to the Electronic Times of January 26, "Omron Electronics will unveil its prototype identification unit at this year's Smartcard 98 show in London. The Personal Authentication Unit - 2000 combines fingerprint biometrics in a smart card reader." This small item also noted that the unit took .3 seconds to read the smartcard, and had less than a 1% false rejection rate and less than a .1% false acceptance rate.
