Thx Tom for that very informative clipping. Does this mean that large installations will be hooked up as follows?.
a: Internal networks set up and connected by Smart_switches
b: Nodes on the perimeter connected to the WAN's by Smart_Routers.

Incidentally I dont think the telco's will surrender so quickly. I recently heard that the last mile problem can be solved using a Hybrid Coax with a speed of 600 Mbps on wire . Presently we have a very large speed gap between existing 56k modems and fibre.

The Telco's could for their "Last Mile" switch to fibre in 2 steps to keep cost down. I understand the Hybrid Coax enables them to do just that. Meanwhile, they are likely to lobby against the flat rate for local calls and call for a Pay as you use fee instead. That will ensure that data gets no free ride. WCOM's take over of MCI is undoubtedly motivated by the distinct possibility of revenue increases from those like us. Interesting times.!
