The open letter Monday from Sheriff Daniel J. Coverley was a response to an upcoming meeting at which the library board planned to consider publishing a statement in support of diversity and inclusion. That meeting has since been canceled. In his letter to the librarians, Coverley said: “Due to your support of Black Lives Matter and the obvious lack of support or trust with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, please do not feel the need to call 911 for help. I wish you good luck with disturbances and lewd behavior.” Library Director Amy Dodson told the Reno Gazette Journal that the diversity statement “simply was meant to state our inclusivity at the library, that we are open and welcoming to everyone and we treat everyone equally.” SKIP AD After Tuesday’s library board meeting was canceled, Coverley issued a second statement saying he wanted to clarify that deputies would not refuse to respond to emergency calls from the library. “My response to the Library’s proposed agenda item was to provide public comment about their proposed diversity statement and to further provide open commentary about how this could affect our local law enforcement profession,” he said. Douglas County extends from Lake Tahoe’s east shore to the high desert along Highway 395, and includes the cities of Minden, Gardnerville and Stateline. It has two libraries, in Minden and Zephyr Cove. Coverley, 50, has been with the sheriff’s office since 1997 and was elected to the top post in 2018.
