I beleive it is a requirement for them to disclose the fact that they make market on a particular issue to a client. I'm a graphic designer who designs newsletters for a wall street firm. And each time they recommend a stock in which the firm makes a market, it is required that they disclose that fact (in small print ofcourse).

There was an explanation of this over on the Datek thread. They are not really making markets, except in a few stocks. The MM designation is a result of their relationship with Island.
