ASND has hired one of the top router R&D managers away from CSCO to become the director of GRF core switching Engineering. He has been working on relaunching the GRF switch routers.

Gary,

The numbers don't equate without an aquisition!

According to the release, CSCO claims $100m a qtr. in revenue from RAS in '98. Lets be generous and call it $450M annualized for good measure.

ASND's revenue in remote access was 43% last year or $500M. Consensus Revenue for Ascend in '98 is $1.4B. Assume a loss of revenue contribution to 40% and you still have $560M in RAS sales !

Furthermore, in reply to a question posed by analysts @ the MS conference you covered so eloquently on Jan. 20 regarding surveys showing ASND losing RAS marketshare, Bernie Schneider replied "That was based on revenue. In fact, market share based on ports was up to about 51%. (Q3) Can't comment on Q4. We will know when you do. Based on no major change in suppliers, don't expect us to see much change in mkt share. Hold and slight improvements in 1998 as larger ISPs gain bigger business." and added that they "Expect to maintain leadership in 1998".

So..............if CSCO aint going to buy ASND then either Chambers' data is all screwed up, or they're going to buy the # 2 guy (COMS). (Or, they are just talking thru their hat!)
