net purchase (cost of stock + comm)(this is the cost basis....but don't forget options if you did them)

= gain or loss

then......wash sale rules and stuff

Terry, sometimes dividends are in part a return of capital (for example, when the dividend exceeds earnings per share with REITs and publicly traded partnerships.) In that case (you'll be notified later) you couldn't add that portion of the dividend to your basis.
