January 27, 1998 (TOKYO) -- PerfecTV Corp. of Japan will postpone the start of its satellite data-broadcasting service until April due to delays in developing a PC satellite broadcasting card and a shortage of content for the service, company officials said.

The PerfecPC service, which is targeted toward PC customers, was originally scheduled to start in February.

Behind the scenes, the company and its shareholders are discussing a merger plan proposed in December 1997 by rival satellite digital TV broadcaster Japan Sky Broadcasting Co., Ltd. (JSkyB), whose chairman is Rupert Murdoch, the media tycoon.

The PerfecPC service, which requires data transmission speeds of 1Mbps to 6Mbps, will be offered nationwide. Customers will download files written in hypertext markup language (HTML), game software and electronic publishing products.

To receive content, customers will need to have a PCI board for a PC and necessary software. The boards for receiving data and video broadcasts via satellite will be supplied by Sony Corp. and NEC Corp., the officials said.
