The pot that was around in that day was far less potent than what's out there today. What I see today is often intensively larger, more concentrated doses and designed for particular effect.

One could smoke marijuana all day back in the earlier days and not feel as high as one or two of the common candies or "gummy bears" that are common today. And depending on the type, the high tends to concentrate or focus the mind which permits one to work and accomplish complex tasks as long you don't go overboard with it. It is more like a medicine when it is sold for that purpose: If you use the proper dosage it will alleviate pain or whatever without interfering with your ability to function.

But it is a powerful drug. I could certainly imagine there might be highly undesirable side-effects for pregnant mothers and their children.
