As a company known for Sound first and foremost, and for multimedia secondarily, high end sound companies like Bose or Bang Olufsen would be possible targets.

Sound compression companies could also make sense. If you wanted to stretch, you could go for companies like Phonix, or even hearing-aid companies. Why not companies that focus on products for the deaf?

Imagine the value of a company that could produce sound for the hard of hearing (primarily older people) and deliver to them products and services that give them the (synthetic) sound clarity experienced by a 20 year old?

As far as multimedia, they could go for MPEG decoders and highly efficient video compression products.

If I were Creative, though, I would buy 3DfX (TDFX). At its current market value, it would chew up Creative's $375M in cash, but I'm sure at least a partial stock swap could be worked out.

I think that CEO Sim has just said they are holding off more acquisitions until things stabilize. Cash reserves will be held back. Hence while management continues to be on the lookout to acquire, don't expect anything in the coming 12 months unless it is really that cheap (which isn't likely since most of what Creative wants is in the US and not in the down-trodden Asian markets) or very attractive product-wise (which again is not likely since Creative has basically acquired what they need to execute the strategy that put forth some 12-18 months ago).
