Yesterday, retail lost favour because of egghead, Jc Penny, etc. caused a sentiment that retail is down due to consumer confidence. Even Compusa with record sales and earniings was down for the day.

Egghead made the mistake that they over staffed from 4 helps to 10 helps per store, last year. In the past they hire people, based on discounts they offer the employees(which created more sales, and they also have sales quotas for each employee). Jordan Marsh used to do that and was very successful.

JC Penny changed from discount to upscale (Penny used to compete with Woolworth in downtown old locations) to compete with SEARS. But Sears went niche. Jc Penny still has catalog salesrooms. Sears lost money and closed their catalog business, some time ago.

Nothing new. Badly run businesses that needed change in management or merge and be acquired instead of closing their stores.
