Whipsaw, steve

I have read the Datek messages regarding Datek's relationship with Island. It explains why they often identify themselves as principal, "either buying or selling to me".

I appreciate steve's informative response about the difference between principal and agency, but I still have to conclude that something different is at play in this case. I have many reports for many stocks where Datek is identified as principal, but only in the case of this one stock (AMES) do I see the designation "MM- we are a market maker in this security".

I have no need to press for an explanation of the distinction, and I certainly don't have the the knowledge to give one. As far as I can tell it's just a couple of additional letters on the report with no apparent effect on the price for my transaction. I just like to know what is going on, and it makes me wonder what is different in this case.
