You may be right :-). The point was that even worse alternatives
are possible.

From what I can tell they do pretend to have something
resembling (howsoever slightly :-)) an election there these days
and alternative political parties (other than Suharto's) that
are atleast legal. The military however has a quota in the
legislature which is a strange system to have.

Taiwan, Korea, Singapore had authoritarian systems
from which they transitioned or are in the process of doing so.
Not sure if that analogy applies to situation Indonesia or not.

You probably can judge these things better since you have
been considering a career there. :-)
