FSAGX-FDPMX. These fidelity sector funds were quite different last year (FSAGX mainly in North American and FDPMX heavy in South African goldmines). December 1997: Holdings in FDPMX look very similar to FSAGX and south african gold mines drop to about 7% (still about 30 % last June). Now here is the interesting observation I made over the last 2 days, and this might corroborate the recent renewed interest in south afrcian goldmines.
Looking at their repective peaks in Feburary-march 1997, here is what happened to FSAGX and FDPMX when we look at the their second bottom in January of this year: Interestingly enough, the drop from peak in february-march 97 to second bottom this January was 129% for FDPMX and 105% for FSAGX... probably showing that South African goldmines did very pooly last year. BUT FDPMX was out of them in December... guess what: they might be getting back into them because, over the last 2 days, FDPMX has done almost 2% better than FSAGX (which now contains expensive north american goldmines).... I readjusted my retirement goldinvestment to 60% FDPMX and 40% FSAGX...
Good luck all.
Gaston
