Qwest Expands Network Infrastructure; Deploys Three DMS 250 Switches From Nortel Business Wire - January 29, 1998 08:16 %QWEST-COMMUNICATIONS QWST V%BW P%BW DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 29, 1998--Continuing its rapid network deployment, Qwest today announced it will deploy three new DMS 250 switches from Nortel (Northern Telecom). The new switches will be installed in Atlanta, Chicago and New York City. All three switches will be in service by the end of the second quarter 1998. The additional switches will expand Qwest's on-net switch network to include key business centers in the United States' Northeast, Southeast and Midwest regions. "Our rapidly growing long distance services require us to enhance our network with additional switches," said Larry Seese, Executive Vice President, Network Engineering Operations of Qwest. "The purchase of three new Nortel DMS switches is a precursor to the introduction of our AIN (Advanced Intelligent Networking) product line in late spring." The Qwest Macro Capacity(SM) Network Qwest's planned domestic 16,000 mile network will serve over 125 cities, which represent approximately 80 percent of the data and voice traffic originating in the United States, upon its scheduled completion in the second quarter of 1999. Currently, 3,500 miles are activated from Los Angeles to Cincinnati; and from Dallas to Houston. Qwest is also extending its network 1,400 miles into Mexico with completion slated for late third quarter 1998. The Qwest Macro Capacity Fiber network is designed with a highly reliable and secure bi-directional, line switching OC-192 SONET ring architecture. Upon completion, the network will offer a self-healing system that provides the ultimate security and reliability by allowing instantaneous rerouting in the event of a fiber cut.
