Worswick;
<<I once asked a Chinese historian why the historian of China was so bleak. He thought for a moment. "It is because, " he replied slowly, " Chinese have no sense of coutnry. They think only of themselves and their families.>>

It is very interesting you mention this. My wife, Chinese Malaysian has said exactly the same thing re: the offshore Chinese here. It is truly a dichotomy because IMHO Chinese have a rich history of organizing for gaining wealth (i.e. the Tongs and the concerted networks of offshore Chinese business tycoons who have been so incredibly succesful). So, I asked myself why then, wouldn't the Chinese show similar prowess at organizing for improved political freedom, education systems, roads in their wards, health care, etc etc., especially here in malaysia where ethnic politics are openly practiced. Perhaps the answer lies in something told me by an Indian Malaysian, (an attorney, who has cross party political connections). As he put it: "The Chinese seek wealth to gain power, The Malay seek power to gain wealth. It is a question of orientation."

Best,
Stitch
