It's a cya dog whistle that the white supremacists understand because they know that their POV isn't accepted by the vast majority of people and therefore Trump has to cover his butt. Everyone knows it's a dog whistle; probably even inode but he tries so hard to find out ways that the media misrepresents Trump that perhaps he's convinced himself that Trump actually meant to condemn the people who chanted "Jews will not replace us" while praising the one or two people who marched with them and, I guess he wants to say, the "good ones" among them just mouthed the words, they didn't actually mean anything by it, they just share the common delusion among some southerners like Mr. Node that Lee was a patriot who was forced to fight against the government he had pledged to protect because his ties to his family and the South were so much stronger and really he loved his slaves so much that he beat them out of love (it hurt him more than it hurt them, that is why he had his overseers do it) in order to instill discipline in them because everyone knows that black folks are inherently lazy and need to be taught to work by periodic whipping and being forced to get up at dawn because otherwise they might just sleep the whole day long waiting for handouts from hard working much smarter white folks. It was all for their own good, why don't people understand that? And that is the way it was!
