Thanks Doug. I had seen this in the SCMP. Any anecdotal experiences with Bank of East Asia? My sense from what I have read and seen that it is a "stable" (as much as it can be given it holds HK mortgages) and reasonably conservative bank. Good vehicle to participate in the recovery/growth of HK and China. Tony

On this occasion, we would like to congratulate the whole nation for the New Year. 1997 has been an unusual year in our history. We have witnessed the death of leader Deng Xiaoping, the return of Hong Kong and the 15th Congress of the Party. These events are not only important for China, but for the whole world. In the past year, our reforms have reached a new level of achievement: the national economy has accelerated its development, the agriculture sector has reported record crops and deep reforms have been carried out in the state sector. We have managed to resist the financial crisis that erupted in Southeast Asia. Spiritual Civilization has strengthened social unity, ethnic unity and all nationalities of our country look at the bright future with confidence and hope. 1998 is the first year the new economic plan adopted at the 15th Party Congress will be carried out. Our aim and obligation is to continue reforms of the economy and agriculture sector and speed up the transformation of the state-owned sector. We must develop a democratic rule of law, improve education and the level of technology. Achieving national reunification is the common wish on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. On the basis of "peaceful reunification" and "one country, two systems" we will put all our efforts into developing cooperation and exchanges. We hope the Taiwanese authorities will take this issue to heart and develop direct postal, air and business relations. We call on the Taiwanese authorities to quickly resume negotiations. Today's multi-polarization of the world is obvious. Peace and development are global issues. China is determined to reinforce cooperation with the United Nations and other international organizations in the aim of peace and progress. Friends, Comrades, 1998 is the Year of the Tiger, a year of vitality. We believe that with Jiang Zemin as the core of the leadership we will achieve new accomplishment in reforms and the modernization of socialism. -- People's Daily
