Hayes Unveils Next Generation ADSL Modem for Support of RBOC Deployment By
Alcatel

ADSL Trials and UAWG Fueling Deployment Schedule

ATLANTA, Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Communications industry pioneer Hayes Corporation (Nasdaq: HAYZ - news) unveiled at this weeks ComNet
trade show in Washington, D.C., a next-generation prototype of its Hayes(TM) ADSL network interface card. Delivery of the card, developed through
collaboration between Hayes and Alcatel, one of the world's leading telecommunications equipment manufacturers, is anticipated to begin in Q2 '98 as a
part of Alcatel's contract with the RBOC group formed in 1996 known as the Joint Procurement Committee (JPC) -- Ameritech, BellSouth, Pacific Bell
and Southwestern Bell. Hayes has a two-year exclusive agreement to supply Alcatel with ADSL NIC cards in an effort to meet the needs of its customers
around the globe.

The Hayes NIC will enable users in regions with ADSL service to connect their computer to the existing telephone network at speeds up to 6 megabits per
second. The card will allow customers to interact with data networks, the Internet and associated services at speeds up to 100 times faster than today's
fastest analog modems. The Hayes NIC card will sell for an estimated street price less than US$300, making full time megabit Internet access affordable.

In order to most efficiently and quickly bring this technology to consumers, Hayes will utilize its engine of strong brand recognition, global retail and
corporate distribution channels and low-cost manufacturing to maximum advantage. To this end, Hayes will fully support the efforts of the
recently-announced Universal ADSL Working Group(UAWG), a group aimed at accelerating the adoption and availability of high-speed digital Internet
access for the mass market. The group, led by Microsoft, Intel and Compaq, announced its goal to ''propose a simplified version of ADSL which will
deliver high-speed modem communications over existing phone lines based on an open, interoperable International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
standard.''

''As a leader in setting communications industry standards and a major manufacturer in the ADSL market, Hayes intends to work closely with the UAWG
to offer interoperable, standards-based products at competitive prices,'' said Alan Adamson, Director of Broadband, Hayes. ''Hayes is already supporting
this initiative by including maximum flexibility and scalability in the low-cost ADSL NIC card Hayes is bringing to market with Alcatel.''

''We rolled out our Ameritech.net High Speed Internet Service in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the response has been great. Our customers are very excited

''We're planning to make this service available to 70 percent of our customers over the next three years, and look forward to working with Alcatel for

Hayes will be using the ADSL NIC card to demonstrate an innovative business application from VideoGate Technologies. This technology applies video
and Internet technologies to traditional business applications. For example, a user could call their credit card's customer service department and have a
multimedia interaction with the customer service representative.

Throughput rates for ADSL modems will vary based on the customers distance from the telephone provider. End-users should achieve 6.144 megabits

it looks like ALA is supplying the CPE equipment for its JPC contract through HAYZ.
