Jim: I wasn't trying to pick a fight....I was responding to your post 2863 where you gave all the good news and then said "go figure". I think I have articulated the concerns of the average investor...I didn't say they were right or wrong, but this is what they are thinking and they have a right to be concerned.
Clark is right, the average investor is only looking 1 or 2 Qs out, not one year. A year in the semi business id a lifetime and I don't know many who have the nerve to do that (present company on thes thread excepted).
Re; SE Asia. S. Korea is the largest economy out side Japan in the region. VLSI is not "directly" affected by what happens there, but Ericsson is and probably other vlsi customers. You can figure out yourself how this might trickle down. In October or Noverber I put up a poat saying that I thought the whole SE Asia thing might shave a dime off my 1998 EPS estimates and I'm sticking with that.
I didn't consider it too significant then and I don't now, but obviously some investors do. They are scared and it shows in the stock price today. They won't turn brave until this Asia thing is proven to be behind us...like the next reporting period in April.
