>>"Besides, Mr. Buffett has made an enormously successful investment in Coke when it was undergoing a transformation similar to what MCD is undergoing right now . . . ."

Also, I would say that as a business, MCD is more similar to Coke than it is to any airline business . . . ."<<

Those are good points. If I recall correctly, "McDonald's" is the only brand name that is more recognized throughout the world than even "Coca-Cola." Moreover, it wasn't all that long ago that KO was considered to have "lost" the cola wars to Pepsi. Yet now KO is heralded as a worldwide juggernaut of a brand, while Pepsi has had to transform itself through corporate spinoffs.

I am certain that his own doubts about his knowledge of airlines led to Mr. Buffett's decision to "hedge" his investment by negotiating for strong protections regarding the dividends on Berkshire's preferred airline stock. In contrast, with MCD, Berkshire has been buying plain old common stock.
