Pre school is as important if not more important. I said education, in general, is essential to a thriving democracy. And I am only talking about education in general. It could be self education. I am talking about understanding modern scientific knowledge. But make no mistake, the amount of education a society has collectively will depend on how well they do as a society. Most educated societies are democracies and most democracies educate their citizens. If people are not educated, by whatever means, they cannot understand tyranny well and can be easily fooled by despots, like Trump supporters. Look at history. We have been around for a couple of hundred thousand years, but only became civilized in the last 100, when we got rid of institutionalized racism, sexism and homophobia. The world started becoming civilized when we started having comprehensive public education. <,There are far too many very intelligent rabid GOP folks for me to buy that education ALONE is a panacea.. NOT formal education anyway.. My dad and most of his sibs (half Chinese) were delivered into this world by a Black woman in the slums they grew up in ... in their parlour... My dad was still leerie of Black folks.. despite having them as friends.. IN university he had close friends that were Jewish (His BEST friend) and Black.. He went OUT OF HIS way to introduce us to his Black friends and spend time with them.. That is education that changes society.. not a university degree... My dad had many flaws.. but he wanted us to be better than him in ALL ways... At my dad's funeral I was regaled with stories by an older Black gent that was the son of the woman that delivered my dad and most of his sibs.. He had only kind words for my dad and his dad, my Grandpa.. He acknowledged that there were 'things' but they still looked out for each other.. again .. THAT is education.
