If you need to reduce your impact on the planet, put some energy into doing that. Obsessing over California doesn't even take your very first step toward useful action. It just distracts you from the work you need to do. We have an old woman as a neighbor who moans like you do about the state of the world - as she does her best to make the world around her worse. She needs psychological help. Her problem is her husband died two years ago and now she has no one who's willing to be ordered around by her. . Moaning about a distant place is your equivalent of Japan is replacing coal with more costly disguised-coal, instead of doing something useful like replacing coal with natural gas. It's freakish.
