Hi, Jim! I am not really sure what the news that Monica's attorney is preparing a defense really means. Don't forget that Ginsburg is an old family friend, a medical malpractice attorney. I have heard several attorneys offering analysis on television say that he is way out of his league, and that Monica needs a criminal attorney. It looks like one has been added in the last few days, but the negotiations were already quite bungled by then.

The explanation I have heard most often is that as Starr quickly continues to build a case against the president based on independent evidence, he needs Monica's cooperation much less. And I suspect--from the leaked tapes and the news reports--that even though she is willing to admit the affair, she has more trouble emotionally implicating him in crimes that would likely force him to resign. Also, my own opinion is that he may not be willing to give her immunity unless she tells him who prepared the "talking points" she gave Linda Tripp to coach her on evading testifying truthfully. This is all rank supposition on my part. Perhaps others with more legal knowledge might be able to offer more.
