Cirrus Logic Joins Industry Initiative To Expedite ADSL Deployment

Industry Working Group To Develop Technology for High-Speed ADSL Internet Access Over Existing Phone Lines

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 29, 1998--Cirrus Logic Inc. (NASDAQ:CRUS - news) confirmed today that it has joined the Universal ADSL Working Group (UAWG), which is charted to accelerate the development, availability and adoption of ADSL technology for high-speed digital Internet access over existing copper phone
lines.

Spearheaded by Compaq, Intel, Microsoft and leading telecommunications companies, UAWG will define technology requirements for the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), which is ultimately responsible for setting an ADSL standard. For the consumer, the end result will be the assurance that ADSL modems and related products and services will work together.

''Cirrus Logic is committed to supplying solutions that will dramatically improve the business or home user's experience with the Internet,'' said George Alexy, chief products and marketing officer in Cirrus Logic's office of the president. ''Our commitment to join forces with other companies to expedite affordable ADSL deployment is a natural extension to the work we've already done to enhance Internet access.''

In supporting the UAWG initiative, Alexy noted that Cirrus Logic will leverage its portfolio of products and technologies that address Internet access including solutions for 56K modems, ATM on XDSL, and system-level integration for Internet boxes.

Cirrus Logic Internet Access Technologies

Cirrus Logic views the UAWG initiative as a timely opportunity to extend its PC modem technology and system know-how from 56K into the higher speed ADSL space. Within the network infrastructure and Internet appliance segments, the company has already established a significant presence with the following ADSL-relevant solutions:

o ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) controller for DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Loop Access Multiplexer) in a central office application
o ATM solution that serves as the link-layer controller for ''PPP over ATM over ADSL'' in a customer premise application (Cirrus Logic is a leading supplier of this solution to manufacturers of network infrastructure equipment and high-speed modems)
o Integrated 10Base-T and IEEE1284 for host/PC connectivity (These Cirrus Logic solutions have gained a major presence in emerging set-top boxes and ADSL modems)
o Highly integrated ARM-based system chips for Internet appliances (Cirrus Logic is the leading supplier with more than 25 design wins worldwide)

Currently available from Cirrus Logic's Communications Products Division, these value-added silicon solutions represent initial entries in a broader product roadmap that addresses network infrastructure and remote access
applications.
